Come on Ireland

Something has to be seriously wrong with the FIFA World Cup qualifying system when New Zealand go to head to head with Bahrain for a place at next summers World Cup in South Africa, yet in the European section, France, Ireland, Ukraine, Greece and others are all left sweating for their places.

And to rub salt in the wound, the players of North Korea could well be huddled around a television in Pyongyang tonight, sipping a martini whilst sitting one place above Barbados in the FIFA World Ranking as the Irish battle it out with the decorated French.

Being Northern Irish, I have no problem with supporting my southern irish neighbours when it comes to sporting matters. And while they may be ranked lower than us in the world rankings, bless them, I do hope we have some irish interest in the World Cup next year.

Yes, this may just be the first leg with the second to come in Paris, but I will be doing more than one jolly Irish jig around my living room tonight if we beat the French.

  1. Would there be a touch of the leprechaun juice to get you jigging?
